| Repent! And be baptized in the Name of Jesus", is the cry of the missionary; the cry of the ministers; and the cry of all Christiandom. The new born-again Believer seeks to understand what is this "baptism" they speak. Simply speaking, the word itself means a complete immersion into something. The total immersion of oneself into water, the complete submersion of the body in water, is called water baptism. It is an important act the Believer does to show his faith before witnesses.
First, In 1 Peter 3:18-22:
| "FOR CHRIST DIED FOR SINS ONCE FOR ALL, THE RIGHTEOUS FOR THE UNRIGHTEOUS, TO BRING YOU TO GOD. HE WAS PUT TO DEATH IN THE BODY BUT MADE ALIVE BY THE SPIRIT, THROUGH WHOM ALSO HE WENT AND PREACHED TO THE SPIRITS IN PRISON WHO DISOBEYED LONG AGO WHEN GOD WAITED PATIENTLY IN THE DAYS OF NOAH - WHILE THE ARK WAS BEING BUILT. IN IT ONLY A FEW PEOPLE, EIGHT IN ALL, WERE SAVED THROUGH WATER, AND THIS WATER SYMBOLIZES BAPTISM THAT NOW SAVES YOU ALSO - NOT THE REMOVAL OF DIRT FROM THE BODY BUT THE PLEDGE OF A GOOD CONSCIENCE TOWARD GOD. IT SAVES YOU BY THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST, WHO HAS GONE INTO HEAVEN AND IS AT GOD'S RIGHT HAND - WITH ANGELS, AUTHORITIES AND POWERS IN SUBMISSION TO HIM." |

First, we see the Lord's death is to bring you to God. Secondly, we see that water baptism is a symbol that saves you. Thirdly, we see that water baptism is a pledge of the Believer to have a good conscience toward God always. And finally, you are saved by the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, through this baptism of water.
In Romans 6:1-8 , the Spirits speaks:
"WHAT SHALL WE SAY, THEN? SHALL WE GO ON SINNING SO THAT GRACE MAY INCREASE? BY NO MEANS! WE DIED TO SIN; HOW CAN WE LIVE IN IT ANY LONGER? OR DON'T YOU KNOW THAT ALL OF US WHO WERE BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST JESUS WERE BAPTIZED INTO HIS DEATH? WE WERE THEREFORE BURIED WITH HIM THROUGH BAPTISM INTO DEATH IN ORDER THAT, JUST AS CHRIST WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD THROUGH THE GLORY OF THE FATHER, WE TOO MAY LIVE A NEW LIFE.
IF WE HAVE BEEN UNITED WITH HIM LIKE THIS IN HIS DEATH, WE WILL CERTAINLY ALSO BE UNITED WITH HIM IN HIS RESURRECTION. FOR WE KNOW THAT OUR OLD SELF WAS CRUCIFIED WITH HIM SO THAT THE BODY OF SIN MIGHT BE DONE AWAY WITH, THAT WE SHOULD NO LONGER BE SLAVES TO SIN - BECAUSE ANYONE WHO HAS DIED HAS BEEN FREED FROM SIN.
NOW IF WE DIED WITH CHRIST, WE BELIEVE THAT WE WILL ALSO LIVE WITH HIM." |

First, since sin is disobedience, we realize that we have died to disobedience and can no longer live in it. Secondly, we see when we are baptized, we are baptized "into" his death, taking a real part of that death. Thirdly, we know that we must also be buried with him through this baptism. Fourthly, it follows that we must as well be raised with him to live a new life. In other words, the old things, ways, and person must pass away, being baptized into his death - the complete immersion of death of the old man, carnal nature and sinful nature is symbolized in the complete immersion of the body into water - and all things become new, the new creation, the raising from the dead - the coming out of the water - pledging always to obey the Lord.
Conclusion:
Water baptism is a requirement for the born again Believer. It is a complete immersion into water, providing the death of the person. Then, the coming out of the water, proving the person is raised from death into life everlasting. Water baptism is a witnessed event, recorded in heaven and makes the declaration that the person is the "new man" reconciled unto God.
This tract is a brief explanation for the need to be baptized. A detailed study will prove even more the importance of such an event to occur in the Christian's life. The sooner it takes place, the quicker the Believer will be more secured in the Lord.
